Still Alive

Still alive, in case anyone was wondering.

Not much to report really. I'm still going back to school in the spring, still really looking forward to it. Still really looking forward to leaving my dead-end job, but I can't help but wonder if I'm making a mistake. I mean, at this point I'm feeling like a neccessary part of the company. I've gone from feeling totally overwhelmed with responsibilities to feeling fairly skilled in this position. I've got all my systems set up, a daily routine down... everything flows pretty well. I like the people I work with... mostly. And the money is good enough for me to not worry if I can afford to walk through best buy. I guess I'm mostly worried about failing at school again, having quit a perfectly acceptable job for the privilage to burn a bunch of cash sitting in a classroom.

The worst part has got to be that I'm seeing all my highschool classmates finishing their degrees and coming home sucessful and happy, and I get to tell them I ddr'd away my first semester and couldn't be bothered to get back into school.

what the fuck. I'll give it a shot anyway.

Instead of doing things like e-mailing potential professors and calling to set up a time to register for classes, I've been playing video games.

City of Villians is pretty awesome. The new engine updates make the cityscapes look even more amazing and the new costume options make for even more time playing Barbie Dress-Up: Comix Edition. I don't really have any gripes besides that the Dominator archetype needs more damage or a better innate ability and they need to fix the labcoat model so my character's undershirt doesnt show through the back all the time. Friggin clipping issues.

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth is the most frustrating game I've ever played ever. I know it's supposed to be realistic and all, but the first three hours of gameplay I can't find a weapon in an entire town full of fishpeople?! I mean honestly, stealth is great and all, but after my fifteenth death, I get tired of having to listen to the same 5 minute cinematic so I can try to make that three foot jump again.

FEAR is awesome. Buy it. Steal it. Whatever it takes. This is a game that will make you afraid of little girls. The only problem you may encounter is that it needs a beefy machine to run it. So worth the price of a new graphics card though.

Oh hey I forgot what I was talking about. Time to hit the update button.

Just saw Howls Moving Castle. Definately my favorite Miyazaki film. The ending seemed a little contrived but I'm willing to ignore that for the sheer awesomness of the rest of the film. Hard to pick out a favorite moment. Would probably have to be Howls temper tantrum: "I don't see the point of living if I can't be beautiful" and the reaction to it "He's calling the spirits of darkness... I saw him do this once when a girl dumped him." Much better dialog than the other Miyazakis.

Anyway. Go see it. It's awesome.

Nothing super interesting to report, just typing so's I can get back into the practice of making words into sentences into paragraphs and paragraphs into large... groups of paragraphs all addressing a common theme, expounding some sort of point or detailing a complex scheme.

On a completely unrelated note: I've decided that I'm going back to school, one way or another, this spring. Where and how I eventually end up returning depends on how well my Fafsa goes and what WSU thinks of my request for a fresh start (read: please regard me as a new student and not a returning student with a scary gpa.) Anyway, I've been saving money for this, but it's never enough. I'll likely end up working part time and still asking my parents for help/cosigning on my loans. But that's OK. Two years working a dead end job with no hope for improvement have lead me to the conclusion that it sucks to not have a degree. No. Seriously. sucks.

So thats my plan for the future.

As for the present, I've been looking very seriously at blowing a bunch of cash on a barely running VW Beetle (pre-1998) and learning to weld and do some automotive work on it.... and dropping in a mazda rx7 rotary engine in. Cause beetles doing wheelies just looks so cool. Unfortunately everything I look at on ebay and elsewhere either goes too high for me to consider, or would involve a drive to southern california or upstate new york. Sooo... I'm keeping my eyes open and reading too many gearhead forums.

Played and beat dungeon siege 2. Meh. Good way to blow a few days... collecting the set pieces is kinda neat. The voice acting makes my brain try to escape through my ears.

Playing a HL2 mod called Dystopia. A cyberpunk fps, alot like good old Team Fortress Classic. The punks versus the corporations battling for control of these awesome cyberspace nodes. The most distinctive part of the game is the "Deckers" who exist in the real world, but mostly attempt to get to a cyber terminal and go into an awesome Escheresque computer world to capture turrets, open doors and fight other hackers. Essentially, without a good decker or two on your team, you lose. It's good fun all around, and I've been playing it way too much lately. Plus you can say "I don't THINK so, Sistah!" In a deep, masculine voice. What more do you need from a game? Nothing, that's right.
I've had this nasty infected toenail for a couple weeks now. It doesn't hurt all that much unless I accidentally kick something, but when I wake up every morning it bleeds and oozes puss. I used it to leave early one day though. Told them I was going to go to the hospital but I went home and stuck a safety pin in it instead. It's been getting better slowly, but man does it ever look nasty.

I've been watching Miami Ink on TLC on tuesdays. It's really amazing watching those guys work. Really makes me want to get something of my own, but I have no idea what. I'd like for it to have an amazing, deep meaning too, so people will be impressed when I launch into an hour-long tale when they ask about it.
Ok, I'm a horrible person. There are no pictures because my mother refuses to let me take charge of the camera and then leaves it in the hotel. I'm sorry. Please don't lynch me.

The drive down to Rolla was absolutely horrible. 9 1/2 hours of corn, gas stations with no bathrooms and the unending search for fast food. and bathrooms, because someone has a bladder the size of your average ping pong ball. The one upside to this all was driving my mothers newish SUV, the novelty of which faded quickly.

Checked into hotel, dismayed to find an outdoor pool filled with dead bugs and leaves.

Dinner with grandmother and her boyfriend-who-used-to-employ-brad-pitt-to-wash-his-floors. Had an awesome make your own fajitas thingy, was tasty. Managed to mostly ignore relatives. Success!

Spent evening trying to get City of Heroes to run on laptop. Massive failure. Cried myself to sleep.

Woke in the morning, called Express about vacation time. Had three days after over a year of working for them. Burned them up for the trip. Went swimming with the dead bugs and the leaves. Found massive not so dead bug. Got creeped out and fled pool. Went to University of Missouri Rolla for lunch, free except for my sister's tuition! Was mistaken for future student of UMR, told all about paintball club and ROTC benefits. Went back to hotel and got all-time high score of 200k on lumines. Watched TV.

Went to fantastic Japanese resturant for dinner with mother and sister. Greeted by golden waving robotic cat in japanese as we entered the building. Had Sashimi. Had California rolls. Had teriaki chicken. Was amazinly good. spent most of the time trying to remember how to use chopsticks. Still suceeded better than my tablemates. messy messy.

Back to hotel, watched 3 hour loop of programs on discovery channel 1 1/2 times.

Drove home on an alternate route. Took about the same ammount of time, except this time with clean bathrooms, fast food and an amazing rest stop with wireless internet and coffee vending machine. may move in there if made homeless.

aaannnndd.. that was my trip. Now just imagine this post, except with a bunch of awesome pictures, like a japanese guy in a black and white checkered robe cutting up raw fish. that's what this was supposed to be.

oh well. anyway, bed time.

Hopefully I interview friday. In the meantime, I am the waking up at 5:30 so as to have internet and super-hero time before my two-day stint working for "Jet Black", an asphalt coating company. I am supposed to be there at eight. Coffee give me strength! Anyway, that's what's going on.

Oh yeah, and there's some stuff with having a baby 'round the house, but I'm sure you don't care about that.

I bought city of Heroes monday last week. So far I have spent about three hours in the costume creation part of the game and about ten to twenty in the actual game.

Heh. looks like I need to buy another copy though, Becky expressed interest in playing and now has two characters on my account, I'm hoping that I can get her addicted to, um, actual games... y'know... with graphics?

But anyway, that's been what's going on with me. That and con. and the littlest ninja, who is still cute, but slightly less so with giant baby-pimples on her face.

Um. did I post on Con alreay? It was fun. Lots and lots of fun, actually. I didn't really do that much there, but just being around all that geek was really awesome. I'm posting now because I'm trying to apply online at Mayo and their site is finicky.

I'm going to be getting a job in the next week or so. I don't care where anymore, I just need to work. I'm going up to express personel today to get a check and talk to them about their horrible lack of jobs for me.

but anyway. I've got some awesome pictures from convention that I'll post as soon as Jim gets them up.

Later.

Went to marscon this weekend.
Had much fun with a high level of hardcore geekery.
Woo.

Highlights:

Playing the wandering cleric "Izzy" who saved the late-night D&D party from nearly certain doom. "Three 16's on your stat rolls? Cheater!"
Meeting up with Josh from convergence/ren fair again.
Whooping up on the poor sad little magic players with every single deck I own.
Going to Wizards of the Coast in the Mall of America, getting 65% off everything I bought there.
Luke Ski, Worm Quartet, Dr. Demento and some other guy I should probably remember putting on a concert of dementia friday. Rock the fuck on.
Oh yeah.. Being at con. It's like stepping through a mirror to a magical land where everyone is fun and interesting... like being home.... *tear*

Lowlights:

Being so sleep deprived I was dizzy. For the entire weekend.
Sleeping through most of saturday afternoon.
Drunk people in the 11th floor parties.
Lack of approchable people of my age.
NO FREAKING DDR! wtf is that?!
No LAN. Good thing I didn't bring my computer.
General lack of funds. Yay for bills.
No DDR.
All the freaking DBZ idiots who do nothing but fill the gaming rooms with their unwashed bodies.
Drunk people.
No DDR, goddamnit.
Heat levels in any room with people in it were stupidly high, think mid to upper 90's.
It eventually ended.

But anyway, I love con. Seriously, where else can you find Klingons partying with faeries in the kareoke room, singing Y.O.D.A.?

Anticipating Convergence so much! It's about 3 times the size of Marscon and about a hundred times more fun.

There will be DDR and a LAN.

They also banish the unwashed hordes of gamers to the 22nd floor, except DDR or course, so the entire con is alot less... aromatic.

Everyone must attend con, and like it.

Unless you're a dane, of course. Then we just jam you in an elevator indefinately and watch you go quiet and merge with the wall every time one of "those weirdos" gets on.

anywho.

_the end_
